Apollo in the Grass
is the first collection in English translation of Kushner’s post-Soviet poems, and also includes certain earlier ones
that could not be published during the Soviet era. Kushner speaks to us from a place where the mythic and the historic coexist
with the everyday, where Odysseus is one of us, and the “stern voice” of history can transform any public square into a harrowing
schoolroom. This layering of times and events is also embodied in Kushner’s distinctive poetic voice. Echoes of earlier Russian poets
and styles enrich and complicate an idiom that is utterly natural and contemporary. Now, as in the Soviet era, Kushner’s work is
especially cherished for its exemplary stoic integrity. But these lyrical poems are also pieces of exquisite chamber music, songs
where poetry dazzles but “greatness is . . . sooner scaled to the heart / Than to anything very enormous.”

The Black Eagle of Harlem was the nick name given
to Herbert Julian, an African- American aviator who
attempted to cross the Atlantic, in 1924, years before
Charles Lindbergh. Herbert failed on that occasion,
though he was to succeed in 1929. Born in Trinidad, in
1897, Herbert was known for his flying feats and daredevil
stunts in the U.S., flying with the Five Blackbirds the
first African American precision flying troupe. He was
a larger than life character who spent time in Ethiopia,
Finland, and the Congo. Julian died in the Bronx, in
February 1983.

Educating the nation’s rapidly rising population of dual language learners
(DLLs) is as much a challenge as it is an opportunity for improving our
practice with them. Many English-speaking young children struggle with
learning to communicate effectively. DLLs face a double challenge of
learning not only academic skills, but also the social imperatives associated
with communication. To be successful in school, they must navigate the
cultural, linguistic, academic, and social terrains. This book offers a wide
variety of strategies for fostering effective communication skills in DLLs that
are needed to succeed academically and socially now and in the future.
This pictorial history of Kean University documents its transformation from
a normal school training primary school teachers in Newark in the 1800s
to the global university the institution, anchored in Union, has become
today. The photographs collected in this book tell the intellectual and
social history of Kean as the institution has grown and changed along with
America and American higher education over the past 162 years.
