Adele Dunlap ’23
achieved a singular title,
reserved for the remarkable person in the
United States who has lived the longest, and
witnessed more history than anyone – Oldest
American. The Kean Alumni Association
honored Mrs. Dunlap on August 2nd as a
member of the Newark Normal School Class
of 1923, at a gathering at the residential care
facility in which she resides.
1960s
Lee Bennett Hopkins ’60 H’80,
Kean
Distinguished Alumnus (1972) and honorary
degree recipient (1980), received the Regina
Medal Award for 2016, awarded by the Society
of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. A
prolific children’s author, Mr. Hopkins is known
throughout his field
as a poet and poetry
anthologist, whose
numerous award-winning
books for children and
young adults have
played an instrumental
role in keeping poetry
for children alive and
thriving.
Dr. Ann Walko ’60
was named incoming
president of UNICO National, the nation’s
largest Italian-American nonprofit service
organization whose chapters engage in
philanthropic, cultural, educational, and anti-
bias activities. Dr. Walko, a professor at Kean
University and a resident of Scotch Plains, is the
first female president elected from New Jersey.
June Ejk ‘62 r
eceived a glowing profile in
the Scranton Times-Tribune, detailing her
extraordinary career and volunteer activities.
Ejk has been a special education teacher, a
school principal, a due-process hearing officer,
a municipal court advocate, and a township
supervisor in Clifton Township, PA. She is
also an EMT and 30-year volunteer with the
American Red Cross, serving as a disaster
site relief worker and providing training and
program development assistance in Africa,
Peru, and Iceland.
Former coach and current administrator for
Kean University,
Patrick Ippolito ‘62 ‘65 MA,
was inducted into The Kean University Benisch
Athletic Hall of Fame this spring as part of the
2015 class.
Lynn Gaines Shereshewsky ’63 ’67 MA,
quilter and fiber artist, was featured at the
Harvest Quilters of Central NJ’s 32nd annual
quilt show in Scotch Plains, NJ in March 2015.
Lloyd Feinstein ’64
published a two-book
series entitled Shorten Your Job Search: Build
Confidence, Communicate Your Value and
Quickly Land Your New Job, which focuses on
helping job seekers market their resumes and
communicate their value.
Dr. Vito A. Gagliardi Sr. ’64 ’67 MA,
a former
NJ Commissioner of Education, was sworn in as
a representative on the Brick Township Board
of Education in August 2015. Gagliardi has
50 years of experience in education, serving
as an educator, Superintendent, Deputy
Commissioner of Education, Commissioner of
Education, and senior policy advisor.
Ann T. Moore ’66 ’85 MA,
a guidance
counselor at Roselle Park High School, was
named the 2014-2015 Counselor of the County
for Union County by the New Jersey School
Counselor Association. Moore has been with
the Roselle Park School system for 42 years;
serving 25 years as a teacher, and 17 years as a
counselor.
Arthur Kirk ’68 ’73 MA
will have a new
academic building at St. Leo University named
after him. Kirk, Kean’s 1997 Distinguished
Alumni Award recipient, retired as Saint Leo’s
President last summer, and was also named the
university’s first President Emeritus.
Edward A. Esposito ‘69, ‘72 M.A.,
president of
the Kean University Alumni Association, received
the Council for Advancement and Support of
Education (CASE) District II’s Robert L. Payton
Award for Voluntary Service.
Carlotta G. Holton ’69 ’74 MA
published
Grave Matters, her latest book in the horror
genre.
Grace Matturri ’69
retired as an educator from
Bookdale Elementary School, after 23 years
of service. Ms. Matturri spent 26 years in the
district, and 31 years in total as a teacher.

were among four clinical instructors from
the College of Education at Kean University to
present at the prestigious National Association
for Professional Development Schools
Conference, held in Washington, D.C. over the
March 3, 2016, weekend.
Adele Kenny ‘70,
acclaimed poet and 2014
Distinguished Alumna, published her 23rd book,
A Lightness, a Thirst, or Nothing at All (Welcome
Rain Publishers) a collection of 52 prose poems.
Kenny was also named a 2016 Paterson Poetry
Prize finalist for the book.
Franc Palaia ’71,
Hudson Valley photographer,
exhibited “A Photographic Diary of Joseph
Bertolozzi’s Tower Music/Musique de la Tour”
this summer, with the exhibition running from
June to July.
Barbara Friedrich Parcinski ’72 was profiled
in the June 2015 edition of The Asbury Park
Press for her longtime unbeaten record in
javelin, and would later go on to win gold
at the Pan American Games that summer.
Friedrich Parcinski’s past achievements include
representing the United States at the 1968
Mexico City Olympics, a collegiate title for
javelin in 1970 for Kean’s predecessor, Newark
State College, and a successful post-college
career as a teacher and coach of various sports
in Toms River, NJ.
Barbara James ’72 MA
became one of only two
female deacons to be ordained in the 38-year
history of New Hope Baptist Church in East
Orange this past February.
Constance Alexander ’74 MA,
award-winning
columnist and writer, received a health care
fellowship from AHCJ in Cleveland.
