Both commission projects are developed under the umbrella of the
Premiere Stages Play Festival. Each year fromOctober 1, 2016 through
January 1, 2017, Premiere accepts submissions of unproduced new
plays from playwrights affiliated with the greater metropolitan
area (New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania) for
development through the Festival. Four plays are selected for
readings, workshops, and/or full productions. In
addition, Kean
University students earn valuable equity points toward their union
cards through their work as interns, understudies, and performers.
There is no fee to enter the competition, and full submission
guidelines can be found on Premiere’s website (
/
premierestages), under the “Play Festival” tab.
Multiple plays produced at Premiere have been honored by the
American Theatre Critics Association, and/or been published by
Samuel French, Dramatists Play Service, Dramatic PublishingCompany,
Playscripts, and Broadway Play Publishing. A number of Play Festival
winners and finalists have also subsequently been produced in New
York, including Lindsey Ferrentino’s
Ugly Lies the Bone
(2014 Premiere
Stages Play Festival Finalist), which was presented at Roundabout
Theatre, and Kimber Lee’s
Brownsville Song
(2013 Play Festival Finalist),
which was produced by Lincoln Center.
HEALING THROUGH THE ARTS
Under the umbrella of its Play Factory Residency Program,
Premiere Stages will expand its partnership with Matheny Medical
& Educational Center’s Arts Access Program, and Atlantic Health’s
Healing Arts, to offer uniquely conceived playwriting showcases of
new works. In November, Premiere will present plays written by the
clients of Matheny as part of the celebratory Full Circle Showcase.
In March, Premiere will present plays, poetry, and prose written by
professional and domestic caregivers that express the challenges,
sorrows, and joys of the caregiving experience.
